In their first game of the Under 17 qualifiers in Armenia, Gibraltar U17 lost 4-1 to Republic of Ireland in a game which saw Gibraltar score their first goal since joining UEFA.
16 year old George Wink, of Atletico Zabal, put Gibraltar in the lead, but a double from Fulham’s Shane Elworthy, alongside goals from Manchester City midfielder Tom Holland and Steven Kinsella of Templeogue United ensured Ireland got the win they would have expected before the game. Elworthy had the chance to score a hat trick, but his penalty was brilliantly turned past the post by Gibraltar keeper Bradley Banda.
Despite the end result, Stephen Head’s boys can take great pride in the display they put on against a team filled largely of footballers at Premier League or top Irish teams. Their next game is against England Under 17’s at the Armenia FA Academy Stadium. The facilities in Yerevan, which were described by England coach John Peacock as being “first class” and “not too dissimilar to St George’s Park” on the official English FA website should provide good training for Gibraltar, who play their remaining two games at the complex.
