Gibraltar vs Montenegro – 23rd January (18:00 CET) – Hall of Sports Charles Erhman, Nice – Group A
In a first for Gibraltarian football, Mario Prescott will lead out a Gibraltar national team into a UEFA recognised event. Perhaps fittingly, the first encounter for Gib should be against Montenegro, the nation who were admitted into UEFA on the same day Gibraltar were rejected in 2007. As the first of three games over the space of four days, the GFA will be looking for a good start in this encounter. However, the fact that only one team qualifys from each group, alongside the higher experience held especially by France will make qualification very difficult for Gib, and realistically a good showing on the international stage over the four days would be considered positive by the GFA.
Gib team news:
George Cabrera is doubtful with an injury sustained whilst playing for Lincoln in their 2-1 victory over St Joseph’s on the 12th. Other than that, and a few minor strains and niggles, Prescott should have the rest of his team freely available to play on Wednesday.
Sveto Ljesar is the current manager of the Montengrin futsal team. Having spent a 12 year career playing in 11-a-side football for FK Bokelj in the Yugoslavian league system, he made the swap to futsal to coach KMF Zomima, as well as spend six years as assistant to the Yugoslavian national futsal team. He has coached Montenegro since 2007, and almost led the team to qualify to the 2012 European futsal championships, in their first appearance in the qualifying stage, notably beating France along the way.
Opposition Dangerman: Zoran Barovic. Playing for current Montenegrin futsal champions Jedinstvo, he has 6 goals in Montegro’s last 8 futsal matches, and should he be playing on Wednesday, he’ll provide a big threat to Gibraltar’s defence.
