Domestic Season still delayed – FIFA 2 Star pitch being laid at Victoria

The 2012-13 GFA domestic season is still in hiatus, as works are carried at the Victoria Stadium to successfully upgrade the artificial turf to a FIFA 2 Star level.

The FIFA 2 Star artificial pitch is designed for ‘Top Clubs, Stadia, International Matchplay” . The previous turf was considered a 1 Star pitch, so this improvement is clearly in preparation for international competition.

This level of pitch quality will allow domestic and international teams to play UEFA and FIFA competitions at the Victoria should Gibraltar get into the respective football organisations in the future.

The turf is also approved by the International Rugby Board, so there is always the chance that the Victoria Stadium can share both international football and rugby union matches.  The prior turf at the Victoria Stadium had always been a concern for Gibraltar’s rugby teams, which led to them playing at the DTC pitch instead.
