Gibraltar overcame a strong England C team 3-1 at the Victoria Stadium tonight, and the result was full deserved, as bar a bit of bad luck and wasteful finishing, both teams could have got more goals.
The first half was a tight affair, if sometimes sloppy, but it was Gib who took the lead after 42 minutes, as a good team move led to Lee Casciaro scoring once again for the national team.
England C looked capable of getting back into the game, but two goals in 5 second half minutes killed off the contest essentially. Gib made it 2-0 after what seemed to be a handball given against England. This understandably led England C to push forward in search of a way back into the game, but this led to Gib being able to initiate an impressive counter attack to secure the victory, and keep the crowd, who nigh on packed out the entire main stand, happy.
England C are clearly a well run outfit, and had it not been for some wasteful finishing and decent goalkeeping, the game might have been more even. Nevertheless, they did get an arguably deserved consolation goal with 5 minutes left.
The game ended positively with both sets of teams applauding the fans, as well as the Gibraltarian team and staff lead chants about gaining UEFA entry. Notable tonight also was the refereeing, which was markedly improved compared to previous national games, also a positive sign.
