After the first matchday of football in the 2011 Island Games in the Isle of Wight, results for the men’s and women’s teams of Gibraltar were very contrasting.
The men kicked off their attempt at gold with a comfortable 6-1 victory against Alderney. Lee Casciaro and Roy Chipolina got double’s, whilst Joseph Chipolina opened the scoring, and a penalty from Daniel Duarte capped off the victory, with Josh McCulloch getting the sole goal for Alderney. Tomorrow’s game against the Ynys Mons, should provide a tougher test, and also brings about a rematch of the infamous game 2 years ago which sees manager Allen Bula serve a touchline ban this tournament.
The women, in their debut attempt at the games, were not expected to get very far, but will still be disappointed after losing 9-0 to the Isle of Man. Making the step up to a full size pitch is tricky, and the Games should be a good experience lesson for the team. They have a day off tomorrow before facing another tricky contest at the hands of Greenland.
