The Island Games football draws for both men and women were drawn out yesterday.
Gibraltar’s men have been handed a tough draw in Group B, alongside Yns Mon (Anglesey for those less familiar with the name), Alderney, and hosts Isle of Wight.
In their debut attempt in the competition, Gibraltar’s ladies also have a tough draw in Group B, alongside Isle of Man and Greenland.
However, these draws may not be a finished matter. Just a day after the draw was made, the following article appeared on the 2011 Island Games website, which states the following:
“Discussions were held yesterday evening between the members of the IGA Football Technical Committee on the interpretation of the International Island Games Byelaws in respect of the 2011 Football Draw, and the issues possibly arising in respect of the programming of matches to complete the tournament within the Games Week.
As a result of these discussions, the Technical Committee has decided to defer any decision on a possible redraw or adherence to the situation as it now stands, until week commencing Monday 9th May.
The Organising Committee for the 2011 NatWest Island Games accepts this decision and will advise the Islands and the media as soon as a decision has been made.”
This mess up due to potential scheduling issues is clearly something that should have been looked at before any draw was made, and is poor showing from the organisers. Hopefully a redraw isn’t needed, if only to save face, but if it is needed, then it looks like the draw may be done some time next week.
