Local youngster has trials at Middlesbrough + Rock Cup draw

Local teenager Dion Hammond played his first game on the weekend after a weeks trial at Middlesbrough FC’s academy.

The trial, organised by Allen Bula, sent him to ‘Boro for a week’s trial with the academy, who were going through a batch of trialists.  In an interview with the Gibraltar Chronicle, Hammond seemed to enjoy it, although whether he gets a spot in the team is another matter, especially as people who watched the academy match suggested that he wasn’t too impressive, in fact @BoroYouths on Twitter suggests that he might have been struggling due to the different conditions.  Nevertheless, the experience should leave him in good stead for the future.

Hammond played for Manchester United in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Glacis, which could potentially leave Lincoln 8 points ahead when they play their catch up game, and if they win the league, they equal Glacis’ 70’s record of 9 successive Premier Titles.

In other news, the Rock Cup draw was made, with the biggest draw arguably being the battle of the undefeated sides in Gibraltar, as Gib Pilots go up against Lincoln.

The full draw is as follows:

Gib Pilots vs Lincoln F.C

St. Joseph’s vs Sporting

Gib Utd vs Glacis Utd

Britannia vs Cannons F.C

Generally, the football trials are held in the summer (generally July and August). Most teams will put out advertisements in the local paper (Gibraltar Chronicle), but sometimes it’s a case of hearsay.
