Gibraltar Senior Festival Cup confirmed

As I mentioned was a rumour in the previous post, a Gibraltar Cup was rumoured to be in the works.  It has now been confirmed, albeit with a slight change to the rumours that were occurring at the time.

The competition will be contested between the local Spanish teams of Real Balompédica Linense, Unión Estepona CF*, UD Los Barrios and the Gibraltarian National Team.  The competition is spread over 4 days at the end of August, at the Victoria Stadium, the national stadium (and effectively the only stadium) of Gibraltar.

As the poster indicates, Gibraltar and Linense, essentially the most neighbouring of the teams, have been drawn apart from the draw, with Gibraltar drawing Los Barrios, and Linense facing a stern test in Segunda B4 team Estepona, who finished a very respectable 9th in their first season since gaining  promotion to the Segunda B4 in 2008-09.

It has been confirmed that Joseph Chipolina of Linense will be playing for Gibraltar, with country prevailing over club in this situation.  Here is the team picked by coach Allen Bula to represent Gibraltar in this quadrangular friendly competition:

Goalkeepers:

Jamie Robba

Jordan Perez

Defenders:

Juan Carlos Garcia

Stephan Cardona

Neil Medina

Juan Luis Duarte

Sean Mascarenhas

Ryan Casciaro

Yogan Santos

Midfielders:

Liam Clark

Aaron Pallas

Brian Perez

Kenneth Chipolina

Joseph Chipolina

Daniel Duarte

Forwards:

Roy Chipolina

Lee Casciaro

Al Greene

The 19 man squad are being followed by local tv producer GBC’s Sports Report programme, starting from last Wednesday, and presumably following up every Wednesday until the competition starts.  You can watch Sports Report online on the GBC Player: http://www.gbc.gi/television/tv-player.php?programme=69&episode=1806 (The football feature is the first feature on the show)

All things going to plan, I will be buying tickets for all the matches, and you can trust that I will provide you with results after the matches occur.

*Estepona were not originally schedule to participate in the competition, but after Algeciras pulled out of the friendly tournament, Estepona stepped in as their replacement.
